Tribal devp prog launched in Karbi Anglong village

GUWAHATI, Nov 10 - With an aim to uplift the socio-economic status of around 350 families in West Karbi Anglong, a Tribal Development Programme was launched at a village recently. The project is fully funded by NABARD.

The area, endowed with untapped natural resources is not yet developed due to lack of connectivity and the required intervention by the Government agencies. Dominated by members of the Karbi community, the livelihood options are quite limited and the families have to rely on only a single cultivation annually.

This project, which is being implemented by Kolong-Kapili, a society for integrated rural development, has come as a viable option for these families to improve their living standards and ensure better prospects for their children.

Launching the project, Rajashree K Baruah, Chief General Manager (CGM), NABARD, RO, Assam, urged all the beneficiaries to work hard and avail the emerging opportunities to improve their economic condition.

Being impressed by the beautiful traditionally woven Karbi dress and gamusa, she suggested that along with the project they could start weaving cluster and set up a rural mart in order to showcase and sell their products.

Under this project, which is an integrated approach towards economic sustainability, the families are involved in areca nut, orange, turmeric, pineapple cultivation in select areas. The boundaries are covered by teak plantations. The other livelihood activity is rearing of local poultry.

In the project, there is also provision for soil conservation and water resource management. The other issues such as women development, capacity building, community health, farmers training and exposure visit will also be addressed during implementation.

The function was also attended by Leena Mohurle, Manager of NABARD, P Bulte, DDM of Karbi Anglong NABARD, Dr S Maibongsa, Head of KVK Diphu, and Rajen Phangcho, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Karbi Anglong, among others. A tree plantation drive was also undertaken on the occasion.
