By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Nov 26 - As many as 166 candidates of Congress, BJP, Trinamool Congress and other political parties have submitted nomination papers for the upcoming civic polls in Tripura, official sources said here. With this, the number of contestants has increased to 917.

The CPM has put up 298 candidates while the Congress has fielded 277 candidates. As many as 260 BJP candidates have also submitted their nomation papers for the ensuing polls. The Trinamool Congress has put up candidates only in 36 Wards of different civic bodies.

The upcoming civic elections would certainly witness triangular fights in almost all civic bodies including the prestigious Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). Since there is no electoral understanding among the political parties, the stage is all set to draw a triangular electoral battle in the civic elections.

The Congress has failed to field candidates in Amarpur Municipal Council in Gomati district due to very poor organisation giving a scope to the BJP to improve its show in the upcoming electoral battle. Not only Amarpur Municipal Council, the main opposition Congress could not put up candidates in six Wards of Kumarghat Municipal Council in Unakoti district.

The elections to Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 Municipal Councils and six Nagar Panchayats would be held on December 9 and counting is scheduled to take place on December 12 next.
