Train services hit by floods in Dhemaji

DHEMAJI, Aug 2 - Though the overall flood situation in Dhemaji district was improving, yet the third wave of monsoon rain again created flood fury in Dhemaji, Gogamukh and Sissiborgaon circles under the district and inundated many rural areas, thereby leaving a trail of devastation.

As per a District Disaster Management Authority report, the flash floods affected 38,450 people of 118 villages spread over in Dhemaji, Gogamukh and Sissiborgaon revenue circles. It also submerged more than 2,000 hectares of standing crop in the three circles.

Worse affected Gogamukh circle alone has recorded 20,600 flood-hit people in 54 villages.

Recurring floods in the district so far has claimed 4 lives; while 4 others are reported missing.

Overflowing water of Jiyadhal river damaged railway embankment and approach bridge (Bridge No. 693) at Jiyadhal Bhojugaon in between Dhemaji and Bordoloni railway stations on Wednesday and snapped rail communication. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) suspended plying of all trains along the route for the day. Thus, operation of Murkongselek-Rangiya passenger train, Murkongselek-Dekargaon passenger, Kamakhya-Murkongselek intercity (Lachit Express) and Naharlagun-Tinsukia passenger and other good trains were affected for the day. The NFR authority engaged man and machines to repair the damaged portion on a war footing.
