SHILLONG, July 1 � Traditional methods can cure cancer and there is a need for awareness among the people regarding the disease, said Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs JSR Marak at a �Survivor Meet of Cancer Patients� organised by State Cancer Society of Meghalaya (SCSM) and Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in collaboration with Shillong Civil Hospital, here on Wednesday last.
Marak who himself is a cancer patient, said, �There is need to spread awareness among the people regarding the disease.�
�It is our fear and ignorance that lead to misconception of the disease and people think the disease is uncurable,� Marak said adding �I myself was suffering from this chronic disease. I did a surgery in Civil Hospital itself and now I am cancer free. It�s not only through scientific methods that the disease can be cured but also through traditional methods.�
The programme was aimed and organised to felicitate the cancer survivors and also provide a helping hand to the cancer patients who are still fighting with the disease.
Joint Director of Health Services Dr A Marwein informed, �patients who are suffering from cancer should not panic or lose hope as cancer now is totally curable and there are medical experts who can bring a change�.
She also said that this being a first of its kind initiative from the department, more such programmes would be held to spread awareness on the disease.
Cancer patients present in the meet shared their feelings. One patient said she was very scared but never lost hope. �One should believe in oneself and think positive and move ahead,� She said.
