Traders down shutters in protest against arrest of 3 in Basugaon case

BONGAIGAON, May 14 - Local traders of Basugaon town downed their shutters today in protest against the police who arrested three youths separately last night from the area in Chirang district in connection with the defacement of AASU office in the same locality on Sunday night.

The arrested youths have been identified as Bittu Sarkar (21), Anuj Saha (28) and Sanjiv (Babu) Saha (35). On the basis of report lodged by AASU leaders on Monday, two separate cases no. 35/2019 and 36/2019 under sections 143/447/448/506/153 A and 120(B)/447/427/153A/504 of IPC were registered respectively against them at Basugaon Police Station in the district after their arrest.

Protesting the arrest of the three youths, local traders of Basugaon town downed their shutters today and demanded their early release. The local people gathered at Sarbojanin Durga Bari in Basugaon town since morning to express their angst over alleged arbitrary action of police on the youths who are innocent, according to them.

Chirang Deputy Commissioner Gautam Talukdar conducted a meeting with the representatives of 12 different organisation at his office today and appealed them to maintain peace and harmony before making them understand about the ongoing update process of NRC. Minister Chandan Brahma was also present in the meeting.

Leaders of Bengali organisations condemned the police action on the three youths and threatened to launch an agitation if the police harasses innocent persons in the name of investigation into the office defacement incident.

On the other hand, leaders of Basugaon local unit and Chirang district unit of AASU had demanded that the administration book the culprits involved in the case within the next 24 hours otherwise they would launch a massive protest on this issue.

Chirang district Additional Superintendent of Police Bedanta Prakash Barkakoty who was looking after the law and order of Basugaon while talking to the media has called upon the people of all the communities to restrain themselves in the interest of peace and tranquility. The investigation is on into the incident, he added.
