GUWAHATI, Feb 22 There is good news for the traditional bell-metal industry of Sarthebari. The Sarthebari-based Assam Samabay Kahar Sangha has been able to secure the trademark (TM) for its bell-metal items.
Disclosing this, sources in the State Industry Department told this newspaper that the trademark would cover all the bell-metal items produced by the members of the Sangha.
However, there is a problem in inscribing the TM seal on certain items. Efforts are on to procure an alternative embossing device to inscribe the TM mark on the bell-metal products. The process is expected to be complete by July next, said the sources.
Efforts are also on to secure the r mark for the Sarthebari bell-metal products. It is expected that within one year the r mark for the Sarthebari products could be obtained.
It needs mention here that application for securing the Geographical Indication (GI) rights for the Sarthebari bell-metal industry was filed in September last.
A process is also on to file a similar application to secure GI rights for the Assamese jewellery, sources said.
