UDALGURI, Dec 1 - A hardcore ULFA(I) militant of �sergeant major� rank identified as Rajan Asom alias Rajen Deka was killed in a fierce gun battle with security forces at West Nalbari village under Kalaigaon PS here in the wee hours today, the Udalguri Police said.
Acting on Intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and Udalguri Police on Thursday night. The gun battle that ensued continued till Friday morning. The slain militant was allegedly involved in several heinous killings in the greater Kalaigaon area and extortion activities in Udalguri and Darrang districts.
Arms and ammunition including an AK-56 rifle, three magazines and 74 live bullets along with a Italy-made 7.65 mm pistol, detonator, fuse wires, eight mobiles and Rs 6,000 in cash have been recovered.
