Top players to play in PSPB tennis

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 � Nations top players like Rohan Bopana, Divij Sharan, Yuki Bhambri, Vishnu Vardhan, Vinod Sridhar, Ranjit Virali and others will be seen in action in the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) Inter Unit Tennis Championship which will be hosted by Numaligarh Refinery (NRL) at the All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) complex here at Chachal from December 22 to 26.

Giving details about the championship, organizing chairman SK Baruah said in a press conference that altogether seven numbers of oil and gas industry like � Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Indian Oil Corporation, Assam Oil Division (AOD), Gas Authority of India (GAIL), Bharat Petroleum Ltd (BPCL), Oil India Ltd (OIL) and host NRL will be vying for the team championship and their players will participate in singles and doubles events. Competitions for veteran players, above 45 years will also be conducted during the five-day championship. As the host NRL will field two teams.

Baruah revealed that all the teams have confirmed their participation and the above mentioned players have also agreed to fly down to the city for the meet. Defending champions, the ONGC team, is studded with leading players and will definitely try to retain the crown, said Baruah. ATTA president Subhash Das will inaugurate the meet at 9 am on December 22.

The organisers have tied up with AATA for smooth conduction of the tournament where the State tennis body will provide technical support. Sarat Roy has been entrusted as the chief referee for the meet.

Kajal Saikia, chief manager, HR of NRL said promotion of sports is one of the primary focus areas of the organisation�s Corporate Social Responsibility. They have already set up a football academy and a tennis complex at Numaligarh. They have been holding State level tennis tournaments regularly in their Kaliyani Club courts. NRL is also providing financial support to various organisations for developing sports infrastructure and holding tournaments. Bruno Ekka, GM HR and other NRL officials like Anup Baruah, Madhuchanda Adhikari were also present in the press conference.
