GUWAHATI, May 15 - Top boxers are raring to go for medal hunt in the USD 70,000 India Open International Boxing Tournament which will be staged at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai Sports Complex here from May 20 to 24.
Nearly 200 leading boxers from countries like Italy, Poland, Argentina, Thailand, Uzbekistan, USA along with host India will be seen in action during the gruelling five-day event. Local boy and one of the nation�s leading pugilist Shiva Thapa will lead the 38-member Indian men�s team while London Olympic bronze medallist and six time World Champion MC Mary Kom will make her competitive debut at home in 51kg.
Addressing the media today, the chairman of the organising committee Lakhya Konwar said, �Assam has the experience of organising world class boxing championships but having the opportunity to host this tournament is not just a chance to promote the sport but also to showcase boxing in Northeast. I am confident that this championship will be hosted in a befitting manner.�
Executive director of BFI RK Sacheti said, �This championship is a great opportunity for the Indian boxers as far as their preparations for the World Championships is concerned, they will be facing some of the top boxers including Asian Games and World champions.�
In the upcoming edition, the gold medallists will get richer by USD 2,500 while the silver medallists will receive USD 1,000.
World Championships bronze medallists Lovelina Borgohain (69kg), 2017 World Youth Championship gold medallist Ankushita Boro (64 kg) along with Bhagyabati Kachari (75 kg), Jamuna Boro (54 kg) and 2018 India Open gold medallist Pwilao Basumatary (64 kg)�are the other local faces who have been included in the Indian squad.
Assam Amateur Boxing Association president Kalikanta Boro and secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita were also present in the press conference.
