Toothless batting let Assam down

By SPORTS REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 2: After some sloppy fielding yesterday, Assam today put themselves in trouble waters with toothless batting.

In reply to Jammu and Kashmirs first innings total of 323, Assam were bundled out for a meagre 165 at the Nehru Stadium here. But, the visiting team did not force the host to follow on and at the end of second days play they were one for no loss in one over.

J&K resumed their first innings at the overnight total of 240 for 7 and added 83 runs in 122 minutes with some lusty hitting. Assam pacer Arup Das came out with a rich haul of six wickets but the damage was already done as the visitors crossed the 300 mark. Debutants Obaid Haroon and Wasim Raza Paray contributed satisfactorily with 52 and 40 respectively.

Assam openers Pallav Das and skipper Dheeraj Jadhav started confidently adding 55 runs. Pallav (28) suddenly missed the line and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Obaid off pacer Md Muddasir Gujree. He should have been more cautious as a 100-run partnership for the opening wicket would have built a solid foundation.

After Pallavs departure, Gokul Sharma returned to the pavilion cheaply (5). However Sib Sankar Roy and Dheeraj added 60 runs for the third wicket. Dheeraj choose a wrong shot off spinner Parvez Rasool Zargar and offered a simple catch to Ram Dayal Punia at short mid-on.

Dheerajs out triggered Assams downfall and the remaining batsmen started marching to the pavilion one after another. Finally, the hosts were all out for 165 in 64.3 overs.

Spinner Parvez Rasool was the man responsible for J&Ks success who picked seven wickets giving away just 41 runs.

Assam batsmen panicked against Rasool and virtually surrendered meekly by losing the last 7 wickets for only 39 runs.
