Toll due to man-elephant conflict now 13 in Udalguri

KALAIGAON, July 25 - The human-elephant conflict has taken a critical turn in Udalguri district, with 13 persons being trampled so far this year by wild elephants.

A man named Galor Wari (32), son of Biren Wari of Okhamati Brahmagaon village near Gogamuch in Dhemaji district, was trampled by a loner wild elephant at Saglijhar village on July 24.

According to information, the victim had come from Dhemaji district to visit his relative. Wari along with some other people had gone out to a nearby jungle where the wild elephant was hiding. He was killed while his friends escaped unhurt. Nature activist Pramesh Rabha told this correspondent that a few loner wild elephants have been attacking people this year in the northern parts of Udalguri district bordering Bhutan.
