TKSC convenes joint meeting on drug menace

By The Assam Tribune

NAMSAI, Oct 11 - A joint meeting of NGOs, village heads, women, youth and student organisations besides prominent leaders of the civil society was convened on Saturday last to discuss about the burning issue of drug and opium menace in Namsai and adjoining areas of Changlang district.

The main objective of the meeting was to solicit views from the general public and draw a consensus as to how to deal with the problem.

The day-long meeting was a historic moment. Most of the participants, including the village heads and gaon buras, spoke and expressed their deep concern over the issue. It was very encouraging to see many youth and woman leaders coming forward urging the elders to initiate ardent action in this regard, said a press release.

The meeting unanimously decided to form a Central Action Committee to chalk out a road map to deal with the drug and opium issues. The committee proposed to form zonal action committees. The modus operandi and guiding rules will be formulated in accordance with the existing customary and constitutional provisions and implemented, the release said.

An ad hoc committee to finalise the zonal units and complete their formation has been constituted with the general secretary of Tai Khampti Sinpho Council (TKSC) as its chairman. The ad hoc committee is slated to meet soon to finalise and take the matter forward for early action by the proposed Central Action Committee.
