Titabor set for performance by 15000 artistes

JORHAT, Dec 30 � As many as 15,000 artistes are going to perform khol, an Assamese traditional musical instrument, at Mejenga Pathar, Titabor on January 6, 2013 with an aim to create a Guinness world record thereby to spread the culture that was introduced by Vaishnavite siant Srimanta Sankardeva. The event is being organized under the aegis of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha Titabor Committee.

Talking to this correspondent, Debeswar Saikia, an office-bearer of the organizing committee said that the mega event is being held to showcase the Assamese khol for the global community to admire. It would make people across the aware about Sankardeva and his contribution to the whole world.

�Earlier we estimated the programme with 11,000 artistes to perform khol. But due to the demand of the willing artistes to take part in the programme, the proposed number has been increased to around 15,000,� he added.

The artistes, wearing the same traditional attire, will play the same beat on the instrument for 15 minutes in their bid to create to create a Guinness world record. The organizers said that the observers of the India Book of Records would be present during the performance.

A field with a length 300 metre and breadth of 70 metre has been prepared to hold the occasion. Several schools and educational institutions in the area will be provided to the artistes coming from different nook and corners of the State to take shelter for which organizers obtained a special permission from the concerned authorities, said Saikia.

Today as many as 650 artistes performed rehearsal for the final event at the playground of the Jorhat Government Boys� Higher Secondary School.

Our Biswanath Chariali Correspondent adds: Biswaath Chariali, Pabhoi and Behali today reverberated with the beats of khol as around 500 participants played the Assamese traditional instrument in their rehearsal to be part of a Guinness world record setting performance at Titabor in Jorhat.

The main programme was held at Chandrapur Bakari here under the aegis of Biswanath Chariali unit of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha.
