By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, Dec 8 Both the farmers and the District Agriculture Department of Tinsukia district are ready to cultivate paddy crop twice a year. The policy has been recently launched by the State Government as National Food Security Mission (NFSM) for implementing the Food Security Act (FSA). With an area of 63,630 hectares of total paddy field in the district where about 12,000 MTs paddy are produced yearly, the department has been trying to encourage cultivation of both pre kharif and summer paddy experimentally in some selected areas since 2008 by forming self help groups amongst the farmers and providing subsidy on seeds, chemicals, lime, pump-sets and weedicide. Moreover, to motivate the farmers, the department provided seeds, fertilizers, chemicals and weedicides free of cost under the schemes of Improvement Packages and Practices (IPP), System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and Hybrid Rice Technology (HRT) to use 3 bighas of land of some selected farmers for cultivating pre kharif or summer paddy as demonstration crops.

The department has targeted 5,000 hectares of land in the district for cultivating pre kharif or summer paddy in the coming year. It may be mentioned that in 2010-11, a total area of 3,600 hectares were used for double crop under (NFSM) and about 65,000 quintals of paddy produced thereof.

The department hopes that in the next ten years, entire Salitolis i.e. more than 63 thousands of hectares of land of the district could be used for duel crops.
