Tinsukia hospital doctors assaulted

TINSUKIA, June 21 � Following the physical assault on doctors on duty yesterday night by attendants and relatives of a Caesarian patient who died in the hospital, doctors, paramedics and other staff of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Civil Hospital here resorted to cease-work protest programme demanding full security and action against the miscreants.

The patient, one Rashmi Das of Panitola gave birth to a girl child by a Caesarian operation at about 3 pm yesterday. She had been infused a unit of a rare (O-) group of blood arranged by the doctor. He advised the attendants to arrange some more blood. But the attendants could not arrange the same for which the doctor referred the patient to AMCH, Dibrugarh following deteriorating condition. Unfortunately, the patient died in the hospital at about 10 pm.

Following her death, within one hour, about 35 to 40 people gathered in the hospital and beaten up Dr Jayanta Bhattacharyya, gynaecologist and Dr Prashanta Buragohain, the doctor on duty. Dr Bhattacharyya had to be referred to AMCH, Dibrugarh due to his serious injury and Dr Buragohain has been admitted to the Tinsukia Civil Hospital. The Deputy Commissioner, SS Meenakshi Sundaram and Addl DC in-charge Health Services have visited the Hospital and took stock of the situation, and assured the medicos full security. The Deputy Commissioner also discussed about full time armed police picket in the hospital campus with the police administration and installation of close circuit television (CCTV) covering entire hospital alongwith entry and exit points.
