Timber-laden trucks seized

IMPHAL, Dec 25 - Troops of Assam Rifles have seized five trucks which were illegally transporting timber from Nungshang to Singkap in Ukhrul district of Manipur.

�Based on specific inputs, the troops on Monday set up a vehicle check post at Lambui in Ukhrul district and seized five vehicles carrying approximately 30 tonnes of timber logs worth Rs 20 lakh without any permit,� said the PRO, Headquarters Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), in a press release.

�The timber was obtained from a jungle near Kasom Khullen and was being transported to Tushar village in Ukhrul,� the release said.

The drivers of the five vehicles along with the illegal consignment have been handed over to forest beat office at Finch Corner, it added.

The Finch Corner junction is located along the Imphal-Ukhrul highway in Manipur.

In another development, the troops of Assam Rifles claimed to have recovered contraband drugs worth Rs 1.21 crore at Tengnoupal check post recently.

The Assam Rifles personnel at the post stopped a Maruti van travelling from Moreh towards Imphal on basis of suspicion. On carrying out a thorough check of the vehicle, 45 packets of suspected brown sugar weighing 607 grams and valued at more than Rs 1.21 crore were recovered.
