By Correspondent

JORHAT, Feb 25 On the eve of the scheduled visit of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to the town, the people here witnessed tight security arrangements by local police and the personnel of the Special Protection Group (SPG), even as the party workers were seen busy preparing to welcome female guests, mostly representatives from self-help groups and other professionals, from various parts of the State. Rahul Gandhi will participate in an interaction with 600 such women at the Kachari Maidan here at 3 pm on Wednesday.

Municipal workers worked overtime to clean both the sides of some roads, including the AT Road, while the airport connecting road Jail Road witnessed whitewashing on the newly-added temporary bamboo-barricades in certain portions on its sides.

While the police and paramilitary personnel are engaged in the external security, the SPG men are keeping a close vigil on the Kachari Maidan. The SPG personnel have restricted the entry of general people to the field where Rahuls programme is going to be held. Organisers from the Jorhat district Congress said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami will accompany Rahul Gandhi who will spend at least one hour with the women professionals.

Meanwhile, elite citizens and various organisations have sought a clarification from concerned authorities on the funds being spent for Rahuls programme in Jorhat.

In a press conference here on Tuesday, a number citizens and representatives from the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and the All Assam Tea tribes Students Association (AATSA) said the people of the town are a confused lot as the programme being organised by a political party has seen involvement of several government officials who are allegedly engaged in hiring vehicles and spending public fund to make it a grand success.
