Three shops burgled in Jorhat

JORHAT, May 29 - Spree of vehicles thefts along with incidents of burglary in shops here seems to be going on unabated as thieves on Tuesday night reportedly burgled three shops at Lachit Bazaar locality besides the AT Road in the heart of the town.

As per the complaints lodged by owners of a jewellery shop, a gold-melting shop and an astrologer, whose chamber was ransacked, thieves broke inside the shops and took away cash and jewellery.

The complainants stated that from the jewellery shop the thieves took away Rs 700 from the cashbox along with silver jewellery, while from the gold-melting shop they (thieves) stole Rs 4,000 cash from the cashbox along with some amount of melted gold and silver. The miscreants then broke the chamber of an astrologer in the same complex and ransacked the room without probably finding anything to take away.

Four arrested: In the meantime, the Jorhat Police arrested four people including a juvenile on charges of snatchings and stealing mobile handsets and recovered 24 mobile phones, the police source said.

Interrogation of the three accused persons were on while the juvenile was sent to the Child Observatory Home on the Lichubari outskirts here by the District Juvenile Justice Board after he was produced before the Board.

It may be mentioned here that in the past four months there have been rise in incidents of thefts in shops, vehicle thefts and also incidents of snatchings bags containing cash and also mobile handsets from pedestrians and pillion-riders by motorbike-borne youths in and around the town.
