TEZPUR, Sept 3 Sensation prevails in Tezpur after three members of a family committed suicide by jumping into river Brahmaputra even as one of the family members was rescued by the police, on Tuesday night at Ganesh Ghat here.

According to police, Bhabani Sarma (55), Makan Devi (50), Manjul Sarma (33) and his wife Astami Devi (28) jumped into river Brahmaputra last night at around 9.30 at Ganesh Ghat under Tezpur Sadar PS. However, on receiving information, police and the SDRF personnel rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Makan Devi, wife of Bhabani Sarma. The body of Bhabani Sarma was recovered last night but the bodies of Manjul Sarma and wife Astami Devi remain untraced.

Police said the family came to Tezpur from Sipajhar to commit suicide apparently due to pressure to repay their huge loan amounting to Rs 60 lakh which after interest amounted to over Rs 2 crore.

Makan Devi, now under police custody, told this reporter that the family had taken money for their TV showroom in Mangaldoi from different persons, including one Madhab Bhuyan, amounting to Rs 60 lakh and the amount, including interest, became Rs 2.80 crore. She added that her son sold an SUV to pay Rs 15 lakh to Ranju Saharia @ Pranjit Saikia, a pro-talk ULFA leader at Bordoloni camp, near Mangaldoi on Sunday. She added that she, along with her husband, had gone to the pro-talk ULFA camp to assure Saharia of repaying the money by selling their houses and properties and also pay Rs 4 lakh every month.

The mother of Astami, who resides at Bahbari near here, alleged that her 8-month pregnant daughter had called her on Tuesday morning to inform that two persons Ranju Saharia and Hemendra Sarma had threatened over phone to shoot them if Rs 5 lakh was not paid on that day.
