Three given life term for murder

JORHAT, Dec 18 - The Court of Jorhat District and Sessions Judge has sentenced three persons to rigorous life imprisonment after convicting them for murdering (under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC) a person of the same village on the outskirts three years ago.

Judge VK Chandak, while pronouncing the judgement on Friday, awarded rigorous life imprisonment to Makhan Das, Prasanta Das and Akoni Das, all residents of Borhuz village under Pulibor police station on the Panichakua outskirts here after finding them guilty of murdering Debajit Das, on December 20, 2014. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each on the convicts.

As per police records, Debajit was attacked by the three convicted persons on the road after he had an altercation with them while he was coming to the market along with his elder brother Dipak Das. Debajit was declared brought dead at the Jorhat Medical College And Hospital.

Altogether 10 witnesses appeared before the court during the trial of the case. The judge further stated that �this court is of the opinion that it is a fit case to award compensation to the parent of deceased (Debojit Das)�.

The judge hence directed the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority to determine the quantum of compensation to be awarded to the parent of deceased, who lost their only son in the incident.

Public Prosecutor Jubon Mohan Das led the prosecution for the State while advocates Bijaya Baruah, Bijulata Das and Bondita Gogoi represented the accused persons.
