Three die in bridge collapse

TINSUKIA, Oct 14 � Protesting against the alleged use of inferior timber in the repair of the bridge over Bandorkhal on the National Highway-37 at Saikhowaghat, Dhola, due to which three labourers � Bijoy Garh, Ajay Goala and Chatu Tanti who were travelling in a truck carrying fuelwood � died after the bridge collapsed on the night of October 12, the people of Dhola Saikhowa area blocked the National Highway on Monday.

The bridge collapsed as the truck was crossing it. The bodies of the three workers, who fell into the water and drowned, have been recovered along with the truck and sent for post mortem. Protesters alleged that every year, the bridge is repaired with poor-quality wood and public money is misused by the contractors and officials concerned.

The protesters demanded appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased persons. They also tried to set afire the truck and the bridge, but the police and representatives of the district administration were able to pacify the mob. The road blockade was later lifted.
