DIBRUGARH, May 30 - Amid rank holders, highest mark scorers and thousands excelling in the recent High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations from the district, three provincialized schools �Netaji Sishuniketan High School, Duliajan Ballika Vidyalaya and Dibrugarh Railway High School have brought disrepute to the district with zero results, which means none from these schools cleared the examination.
Netaji Sishuniketan High School located in Duliajan happens to be stuck with zero result for the third consecutive year. The sudden downfall of Dibrugarh Railway High School has also raised eye brows in the locality here. In the previous year the pass percentage of Dibrugarh Railway High School, which is a Bengali medium educational institute, showed 78.57 % but failed miserably this year. Performances of other government-provincialized schools are also not satisfactory in the district except for three schools, which have obtained above 90% successful results. The three schools with above 90% pass percentage are Pathalibam High School (93.24%), Mancotta High School (91.94%) and Chachaji High School (90.28%).
Schools producing below 30% result in the district are Shyma Prasad High School, Graham Bazar Boy�s High School, Sikh National High School, Banaphul High School, Nassani High School, Naukhat High School, Rashtriya Hindi Vidyalaya, Swarupananda Vidyalaya, Dikom High School, Bongdung High School, Chetiapathar High School, Bismile High School, Tantia High School, Duliajan Usso Vidyalaya, Bapuji High School, Sonowal Charitable Trust Ballika Vidyalaya and Sassoni Girls High School. It is pertinent to mention here that some 243 students had appeared for the HSLC exam from Dikom High School. There are altogether 143 provincialized and two government high schools in the district.
Irked at the poor performance of the schools in the district, Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha who discussed factors with the heads of some twelve poor performing schools yesterday, demanded the heads to present within fifteen days their �improvement plan� so that performance could be enhanced in succeeding years. Further, he also directed the newly-appointed Inspector of Schools Dipika Choudhury to issue �show cause� notice to the Principal in-charge of Netaji Sishuniketan High School for the third consecutive disgraceful result.
It needs to be mentioned here that the pass percentage of the district in the recent HSLC examination which was declared on May 15, is 56.89 %. Out of the 14182 students who appeared for the examination only 8068 were successful. The Inspector of Schools while talking to The Assam Tribune said that several factors entail the sorry state of the low performing schools. �I have recommended for rationalization of teaching staff in the schools. It has been found that some schools have high enrolment but have few teachers while some schools have relatively adequate teachers but have poor enrolment. Again schools with few teaching staff as also schools with fairly enough teachers have performed poorly in the examination. The huge teaching vacancies in schools, particularly subject teachers for Maths, Science, English and Hindi are also one of the major factors for poor performance. Several schools are running with five to ten teaching vacancies. A comprehensive overhaul is required,� she said.
