Thousands throng puja mandaps

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 20 - Maha Saptami was celebrated with great fanfare in different parts of the State along with the rest of the country.

Saptami is of great spiritual importance as Kalratri form of the Goddess is worshipped today, who is believed to destroy the evil elements and negativity from the life of mankind.

Though the formal installation of the Goddess Durga and her entourage was done on the day of Sasthi, the festivities got off to a rousing start on the day of Maha Saptami, with energetic puja revellers jostling for space, and with devotees thronging the mandaps.

Already gripped with the festive spirit since the last couple of days, Guwahati witnessed thousands of devotees throng the puja mandaps, with dazzling illumination and vibrant decoration creating the perfect ambience for the festival.

Devotees made a beeline to the pandals since morning for paying obeisance. By the evening, the spiritual aura gave way to pomp and gaiety with the city skyline lit up by colourful lights, and puja enthusiasts attired in their holiday best, thronging the pandals.

Puja venues at areas like Beltola, Ganeshguri, Latasil, Chandmari, Athgaon, Nayantara, Maligaon, Pandu, etc., witnessed large crowds as usual. Despite the best efforts of the City Police, prolonged traffic congestions hampered the smooth flow of vehicles, making it difficult for the revellers to have a quick tour to several puja mandaps.

Malls and shops, especially those dealing in garments and sweets and restaurants did brisk business and operated till late into the night. Small makeshift shops selling toys etc. and temporary eateries also remained the hub of activities.
