Thousands throng Negheriting Shivadol

By SANJOY KR HAZARIKA

NEGHERITING (DERGAON), March 2 More than fifty thousand people thronged the Negheriting Shivadol near here to observe Mahashivaratri today. The devotees started flocking to the Shivadol from early morning with offerings like earthen lamps, prasad, etc. Young girls and boys also visited the temple in the morning hours and offered their obeisance to Lord Shiva.

It is widely believed that if someone offers puja on the day of Shivarartri at Negheriting Shivadol, the Lord Shiva fulfils the prayers of the devotees.

It is pertinent to mention that the Negheriting Shivadol was built by Ahom King Rajeshwar Singha in 1727 AD and since then the Mahashivarartri is being observed with great enthusiasm. Thousands of devotees across the State gather in the Dol premises in every year.

This time also, several babas coming from different places have taken part in the day-long mela. The youths, including some school students were seen consuming bhangar mithoi and smoking the chillam.

The police along with the civil administration kept the law and order situation in the area under control. Some of the devotees, talking to this correspondent, urged the State government to turn the Dol into a tourist spot as the temple is situated only a kilometre from the NH 37 at Negheritig Chariali.
