By The Assam Tribune

Shillong, Feb 6 (PTI): Thousands of devotees and tourists today thronged the U Lum Sohpetbneng peak, near here, and took part in traditional rituals that seeks to invoke the creator's blessings for peace and well-being of all.

The 'umbilical heavenly peak', about 1434 mts above sea level and endowed with a facade of the masonry art works of the ancients, is believed to have linked heaven and earth through a 'Golden Bridge', according to local legends.

The pilgrimage to the peak, located about 25 km from here, starts every year on the first Sunday of February.

Sanctified rice grain and water was distributed on the occasion to gain spiritual contentment and good health. Khasis believe that there was a tree which served as ladder to the original 16 families for their communication between heaven and earth.
