JORHAT, Dec 18 - Thousands of people including a large number of women from in and around Jorhat town came out to the streets today to be a part of the gana satyagraha agitational programme against CAA undertaken by the AASU with the support of 30 different organisations of Assam.
People from all sections of the society and all walks of life with over 60 organisations representing various communities including Sikh Samaj, Marwari Yuva Manch, Asomiya Bengali Samaj, Eastern Theological College, Ao Students� Conference participated in the satyagraha programme.
Artists, literary persons, lawyers, businessmen, government employees, teachers and people from different other professions participated in the satyagraha programme.
The protesters shouting slogans against the BJP-led Governments at the Centre and State took out a massive rally from the Jorhat Stadium which went through the KB Road, Mahatma Gandhi Road to AT Road via the old bus stand and concluded at the Jorhat District Sports Association Field here.
State Government employees under the banner of Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad and employees of Central Government PSUs also took part in the satyagraha.
Before the protest rally was taken out, a protest meeting was held within the Jorhat Stadium premises where leaders of different organisations addressed the gathering and came down heavily on the Central and State Governments and BJP and AGP leaders.
A sizeable number of Hindi-speaking people originally from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, presently residing in Jorhat since a long time back, under the banner of Jorhat Hindustani Samaj also participated in the gana satyagraha.
Artists, musicians and poets rendered of songs and recited poems in praise of Assam motherland.
Majuli arrests: Meanwhile, 12 persons including three women were arrested by police in the past two days in Majuli on charges of their involvement in violence that occurred last week in the Brahmaputra island during the protests that erupted against CAA. An official source stated that arrested persons were sent to judicial custody by the Majuli Sub-Divisional Judicial Court after they were produced before the court.
It may be mentioned here that on December 12 the Majuli district unit offices of BJP and AGP in Garmur were vandalised by mobs when protest against CAA was at its peak across the State.
