Thousands defy curfew in Dimoria region

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Dec 12 - Defying the curfew in force, thousands of protesters took to the streets in different parts of the greater Dimoria region today against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

The protesters blocked National Highway 37 and other connecting roads, causing a chaotic situation in the entire region.

Looking at the magnitude of the protest, an elderly man recalled that such intensity of protests was seen only during the 6-year anti-foreigner movement by students that ended with signing of the Assam Accord.

Though no party or student body called a shutdown, the protesters, a majority of whom were students, aggressively went for sit-in demonstrations in Sonapur and Khetri areas, blocking roads throughout the day.

Meanwhile, irked by an incident in the morning where some students were beaten up by Jorabat police, about 250 protesters from Sonapur area came down to Jorabat and had a verbal tussle with the police demanding an explanation for their action. The protesters also blocked the highway, burned tyres and shouted slogans like Amak CAB Nalage, BJP Go Back, Joi Aai Axom. They also slammed Jorabat police by shouting Jorabat Police Hai Hai for their action on the students.

Later in the day, the Dimoria regional unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) took out a bike rally along the small and major roads of the region. They also announced their coming protest programme Ganabikhov on December 14.

General secretary of AASUs Kamrup Metro unit Dibyajyoti Medhi said that along with the Ganabikhov, a public meeting, road blockade and other similar activities will be taken up that day in protest against the Bill.

Earlier in the day, Jorabat police personnel were seen dispersing groups of more than two persons and urging the people not to come out for any protest programme that might lead to an untoward situation in the area.
