GUWAHATI, March 22 � The 3rd edition of the TG Baruah Cup State Youth, Veteran and 21 Years Karate Championship got under way at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today.

Over 250 players from the districts like Nagaon, Kamrup Rural and Urban, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Sonitpur, Cachar and Tinsukia are taking part in the two-day meet.

The championship was inaugurated by Assistant Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Muztaba Piar. Director, Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education Balendra Mohan Chakravorty, organising body members Naren Hazarika, Dr Hitesh Baruah, Sarmila Deka and sports journalist Subodh Malla Baruah were present as guests in the opening function.

Pranab Saikia welcomed the gathering and the participants.

Competitions will be held in 62 weight categories in kata and kumite in the meet. Competitors will fight for 62 gold medals and as many silver and bronze. Moreover, the champion of champions will be picked after conducting competitions among the gold medal winners of various age and weight groups. Competitions will also be held among veterans.
