Tension running high in Manipur hill town

IMPHAL, July 13 � Tension is running high in Manipur�s Ukhrul town and its surrounding areas following the arrest of eight persons from the NSCN (IM) office and subsequent imposition of prohibitory orders in the hill town, sources said.

The District Magistrate of Ukhrul district has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC to avoid any untoward incident in the hill town since 7 am today.

Protesting the move of the security personnel and sudden imposition of prohibitory orders, the womenfolk of Ukhrul town blocked most of the roads leading to Ukhrul town by pilling wood and stones besides burning tyres. They are demanding peace in the hill town, the sources from Ukhrul added.

State police commandos along with Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalion personnel conducted the raid at Phungreitang office of the NSCN in the wee hour today, reports said. The arrested persons have been reportedly brought to Imphal for verification and questioning.

The State authority has taken up the steps in a move to arrest and find out the culprits involved in Saturday�s ambush near Finch Corner, in Ukhrul district wherein ADC member Ngalangzar Malue (65) was shot dead while his nephew and driver sustained serious injuries. Reports claimed the ailing mother of the deceased ADC also dies on hearing the news of her son�s death in the ambush.

�The government will not remain as a silent spectator come what may�, said Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh at the floral tribute ceremony to the departed soul of Malue at Congress Bhavan here today.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam informed media persons that the government will provide a job to the next of kin of the deceased ADC member.

The body of the ADC member has been sent to his native village for the last rites under tight security cover.

Newmai News adds: The Naga People�s Front (NPF), Manipur has demanded imposition of President�s Rule in the State saying the time is fit for Central Government�s intervention.

The NPF, Manipur said killings of non-locals, blasts, kidnapping incidents and corruption have become a daily affair under the Ibobi Singh Government. It also said the daily crime rate is very high under the present Congress Government.

The NPF also took serious note of the prevailing situation in Ukhrul district. It said a war-like situation has been created by Ibobi and Gaikhangam in Ukhrul town with hundreds of police commandos and IRB personnel being dispatched there �to harass the people.�
