Tension prevails in Naharkatia

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Jan 3 Naharkatia town and its adjoining areas witnessed total shutdown today in protest against the police firing during a clash between the public and a police team yesterday at Joypur where one civilian was shot dead and a few others sustained injuries.

Normal life was paralysed in the area as all business establishments and financial institutions remained closed. Plying of vehicles was also affected. Public vehicles connecting towns like Namrup, Moranhat, Duliajan and Dibrugarh could not operate due to the shutdown. It may be mentioned here that police resorted to firing yesterday when they were attacked by the public during an eviction drive at Joypur near Naharkatia town yesterday.

Following yesterdays incident, police troops along with CRPF jawans were deployed in the area to contain the situation, which had turned volatile. The area is still tense and the deployed policemen are patrolling and keeping strict vigil to thwart any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, the local Circle Officer, Manoj Baruah and four other injured civilians, including a woman, are being treated at the Assam Medical College and Hospital. One Raj Kishore Bin, who was critically injured, has been admitted to ICU.
