HATSINGIMARI, Nov 5 Tension prevails at South Salmara under South Salmara police station in Dhubri district following yesterdays unsavoury incident at South Salmara, in which thousands of people attacked police escorting an arrested person resulting in injuries to 14 persons, including six policemen.

The injured have since been admitted in hospital.

According to police, a boy named Jahirul Haque, son of Amjad Ali of Madhusoilmari under Gauripur police station, was kidnapped by miscreants on October 7 last and a case was immediately registered at Gauripur PS. At around 3 pm yesterday, relatives of Jahirul noticed one of the suspected persons trying to hide himself at Simalkandi village under South Salmara PS. Observing the suspicious movement of the accused, named Moinal Haque (26), the relatives raised a hue and cry and managed to catch him with the help of VDP members. Police was then informed and Moinal was subsequently arrested.

However, as the police team led by OC Jogendra Deka was returning to the police station along with Moinal, local people attacked the policemen with the intention of snatching Moinal away and taking him to their own custody for killing him as punishment for his involvement in the kidnapping. In the scuffle between police and irate public, 14 persons were seriously injured.

Police, however, managed to rescue the accused youth from the clutches of the mob.
