Teenage girl kidnapped, victims family alleges police negligence

By Correspondent

TURA, March 29 - The family of a 17-year-old school girl on Monday filed a case of kidnapping against a 40-year-old man, who according to them had forcefully taken their daughter while she was returning from school on that day.

The case was registered at the Phulbari Police Station late on Monday. Police sources said a search had been initiated to find and rescue the teen.

The incident of kidnapping of the minor comes close on the heels of many such cases emerging from the State.

This incident happened at the village of Chibinang, close to Phulbari in West Garo Hills.

According to the FIR filed by the mother of the victim, the minor girl was returning from school on Monday when she was waylaid by her landlady, Ruksana Begum (50), whose house she had taken on rent. The land lady then handed over the girl to her eventual kidnapper, identified as Sahinur Mondal (40), who was waiting in an autorickshaw. The girl was then allegedly taken by Mondal and his friends to Assam.

Police sources confirmed the filing of the report as well as a few plain clothes policemen and women going to neighbouring Dhubri in Assam, where the kidnapper is suspected to have taken the victim. However, all those named in the FIR, barring Ruksana Begum, have fled their homes and are currently absconding.

We are on the lookout for three more people who helped in the crime, but have not been able to get to them as yet. Our efforts are on to rescue the girl, police source said.

The victims family, however, has expressed their unhappiness over the police not questioning the landlady on her role in the crime. She was seen helping the kidnapper in the crime and will be aware of where she has been taken, but the police is yet to question her, said a relative on the condition of anonymity.

Interestingly, Sahinur had earlier proposed marriage to the teenage girl, which was rejected by the family of the victim. The family had stated then that they wanted their daughter to continue her studies. This must have prompted the kidnapping, though we are looking at all angles, said the police source.
