GOALPARA, Mar 1 - Shortage of teachers has seriously affected the academic atmosphere in Goalpara College with as many as 14 teaching posts of the college lying vacant till date, compromising the careers of students.

This shortage means that most of the other teachers are over burdened as they all have to take extra classes of both the major as well as the subsidiary subjects, leading to lowering the quality of education being imparted.

A student taking major in a certain subject told this correspondent on the condition of anonymity that the teachers who specialise in certain papers have to teach all the papers due to this shortage and the fate is same for most of the other departments also. As a glaring example, he cited the Department of Mathematics, which has virtually no teachers for the subject in the college.

According to reliable sources, five teachers are engaged in examination and supervising duties. The district administration has requisitioned the services of four other 4 teachers for NRC duties, which could have been easily avoided taking into consideration the issue of teacher shortage in the college.

The source giving specific examples also said that the Department of History has two teachers out of whom one has been assigned NRC duties. Similar is the fate of other departments too. The situation has also worsened with the introduction of a few new courses in the college.

A section of the conscious citizens of Goalpara blame the Government for its lackadaisical attitude for ignoring this basic issue despite the difficulties faced by the college.

It may be mentioned here that Goalpara College has been a centre of learning and providing yeoman service in the field of education in lower Assam since 1955 when it was established. The college which has a rich history in imparting quality education has made huge efforts to produce a number of students who have attained success in their careers and life. At present, the total enrolment has increased to around 1500 students, including higher secondary and degree courses.
