DOOMDOOMA, June 28 - The murder of Lachit Bailung (43), an assistant teacher of Baghjan-Dighaltarrang High School under Baghjan Police Station of Doomdooma circle on Sunday night, has taken a new turn when police picked up two teachers of the school, including headmaster Jogendra Nath Handique (56) on Tuesday night.

According to sources, the police picked up the headmaster and one Hindi teacher, Munindra Baruah (57), for interrogation on Tuesday night. Later, another teacher of the school, Rabindra Nath Handique (32), along with the clerk of the school, Jonabar Moran (50), and the 4th grade employee, Haren Phukan (51), visited the police station to know why the two teachers were brought to the police station.

At around 10.30 pm, Rabindra Nath Handique came out of the police station for toilet and committed suicide just behind the police station building on the same night. Though the police took him to Doomdooma Community Health Centre, he was declared brought dead.

On the other hand, the headmaster and the Hindi teacher reportedly confessed that they along with Rabindra Nath Handique were involved in the murder of their colleague Lachit Bailung. The police arrested Jonabar Moran, Haren Phukan, the headmaster and the Hindi teacher in this connection.

It is worth mentioning that Lachit Bailung used to protest the anomalies done by the headmaster and other teachers of the school.

Recently, under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), a grant of Rs 22 lakh was sanctioned for a science laboratory at the school. But, the headmaster and other teachers allegedly misappropriated the fund which was opposed by Lachit Bailung and hence they allegedly killed him. Another accused in this case, identified as Subanti Moran, wife of Jonabar Moran, has been absconding.

When the news of the arrest of culprits involved in the murder case spread in the area, people in large number along with the students of the school gathered in front of the Baghjan Police Station and demanded to hand over the culprits to them. They also ransacked the residences of the headmaster and Hindi teacher and set ablaze a vehicle of Rabindra Nath Handique.

However, due to absence of teachers and students, the half yearly examinations in the school could not be conducted on Wednesday. The Inspector of Schools of Tinsukia district circle said that he would conduct the examinations on Thursday.

An NGO Sustainable Development Force has declared Lachit Bailung a swahid as he died raising his voice against corruption. In a statement, issued by its secretary Niranta Gohain, the NGO demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits. The NGO also demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victims family and a government job for his wife.
