Tea labourers threaten stir

By Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA , Aug 12 - Worried over the mismanagement of the gardens of the Apeejay Tea Limited, the labour unions have threatened to launch a massive agitation.

The labour unions of 15 gardens of the company affiliated to Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha ( ACMS ) submitted a memorandum to the general manager of the company at Kolkata on Saturday asking him to take correct steps to solve the problems.

The company has been curtailing various facilities to be provided to the labourers as well as the other employees of the gardens which is against the interest of the Plantation Labour Act, the unions said in the memorandum.

The labourers alleged that the company is now planning to close the hospital located at Longsowal here.

The unions also criticised the anti-labour and anti-workers policies of the company and warned that the company should refrain from taking anti-workers policies. The copy of the memorandum was sent to the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Labour Commissioner of Tinsukia district.

Meanwhile, the Dangari Regional Committee of AASU also came down heavily on the tea major. The students body alleged that the company is depriving the local youths from employment in the gardens. Though the majority of the posts in the regional office have been lying vacant since long, the company is unwilling to fill up those vacancies, alleged AASU. The students body also threatened to launch a massive agitation.
