Tea Board issues warning

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, June 9 Failure to comply with the Tea Marketing Control Order (TMCO) rules will invite cancellation of trade licences of tea factory owners, tea companies, agents and all those part of the tea industry. If someone has to be in the tea business, the individual or the organisation has to follow rules of the tea industry, MGVK Bhanu, the newly appointed chairman of the Tea Board of India, told reporters here today.

He said that all those in the tea industry should follow the Tea Boards rules. If someone is finding it difficult to follow the rules, he or she might switch over to some other business, he asserted.

Tea Board chairman was addressing the media at the Circuit House here this evening.

TMCO is a price sharing formula between the tea manufacturers and green leaf suppliers based on the total gross proceeds from the sale of manufactured teas. Thousand of small tea growers over the years in the State have time and again alleged that they were not getting fair price from the tea manufacturers. Tonnes of green tea leaves were strewn by small tea growers on roads last year in protest against meagre price for green tea leaves.
