Tarun Duvarah award for Misra, Ramen Barua

GUWAHATI, Dec 31 � Noted artists Benu Misra and music director Ramen Barua have been selected for the Tarun Duvarah Memorial Oil India Award 2010, the Gauhati Artists� Guild announced today.

The first two recipients of the award were noted artist Neelpawan Baruah and film director Jahnu Barua.

Addressing a press meet today, president of the Guild Aminul Haque said that the award would be given towards the end of February, 2011 at Guwahati. Each of the awards consists of a citation, a shawl, a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a memento.

�Since its inception, the guild�s prime motto is to preserve and protect the art and craft and build a creative atmosphere for the artists of the State to come together and work for the progress of art and craft,� general secretary of the Guild Kishor Kumar Das said.

The award has been instituted in the name of Tarun Duvarah, one of the pioneers of modern art in Assam, who spent his life in pursuit of art without succumbing to the circumstantial adversities and carved a niche for himself as one of the stalwarts of the first phase of modern art in the State.

Other than being a versatile artist, Duvarah had also excelled in other fields like dance, music and acting. The award was instituted in his name in the year 2009 for artistes excelling in the field of visual and performing art and contributing to the society through their art.
