Targeted testing of COVID-19 begins in Manipur

IMPHAL, Nov 20 - The Manipur Health Department has launched targeted testing of COVID-19 in the Assembly constituencies where the by-elections were held on November 7. The testing was conducted in areas under the Lilong constituency today. On Thursday it was conducted in areas under the Wangoi constituency, where 95 new COVID-19 cases were detected.

The health department is scheduled to organise similar testing activities at Wangjing-Tentha in Thoubal district tomorrow, sources said.

By-elections were held in five Assembly seats including two hill constituencies, Saitu and Singhat.

Meanwhile, with 189 new recoveries during the last 24 hours, the total number of cured cases in Manipur reached 19,620 on Friday, officials said. The recovery rate in the State stands at 86.24 per cent.

The recovered patients are from 13 COVID care facilities including those under home isolation, stated Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, spokesperson of the Health Department, in a press release. Out of the 19,620 recovered cases, 16,900 are from the general population and the remaining 2,720 are Central security personnel.

In the past 24 hours, 188 civilians and 12 Central Armed Police Forces personnel were confirmed positive. The new cases were detected at 24 testing facilities in the State, it said.

The new cases from the general population are from 12 districts of the State, including Imphal West and Imphal East, it added.

Meanwhile, a male person aged 58 years from Thoubal has expired at the Shija Hospital, it said. The virus toll in the State has now touched 232.

The cumulative number of positive cases is 22,748, while the number of active cases stands at 2,896.
