Tardy pace of boder fencing works irks Tripura

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Nov 25 Expressing dismay over the tardy pace of barbed wire fencing work along the Indo-Bangla border, Chief Secretary SK Panda on Friday said that insurgents have been operating from across the border.

They (militants) come from across the border and cross over the international border after committing crime in Tripura taking the advantage of a porous border, Panda said while talking to the media at Civil Secretariat here.

The Chief Secretary, however, lauded the role of Bangladesh government in dismantling terror infrastructures in its soil. During Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed had discussion with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and they assured of taking action against the anti-Indian elements sheltered in its territory, he said.

Panda was critical over the tardy pace of fencing works along the international border. The NBCC and NPCC have been failing to expedite the fencing works even after considerable time of undertaking the project, he said.

In fact, militants have been using some unfenced pockets along the international border as safe corridor leading to sporadic militancy-related incidents in some border areas. Of the total 856-km-long Indo-Bangla border, over 180 km is still unfenced despite repeated persuasions of speedy completion of the project.

Panda, who had already written a letter requesting the Centre to speed up the flood lighting project along the border, also expressed dismay over the slow pace of the project. Around 160 km Indo-Bangla border has been put under flood lighting for effective border management.

Emphasizing on better coordination between Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) to guard the international border effectively, the Chief Secretary said that the Centre had promised to send one battalion of BSF after withdrawal of two battalions of CRPF, but nothing has been done as yet.
