Tai Ahom body renews demand for ST status

By A Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, Sept 14 Addressing a press conference here at Rangpur Jyoti Club today, Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam, today alleged that while the government has been insensitive to the issue of giving political safeguards to the community, it is going soft on the illegal migrants.

Declaring that it would undertake an intensive agitation to press for the Scheduled Tribe status, Taypa spokeperson Hemanta Changmai said, We will take up more agitational steps now that our demand has not been accepted so far. Our agitation will be democratic and non-violent. We do not want to take up arms to press for our demands.

Reacting on the handing over the States land to Bangladesh, TAYPA said both the State and the Central Governments have betrayed the people of Assam and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh have signed the pact only to extract political gains.

Rubbishing the deal, Changmai stated that not an inch of Assams land would be allowed to be given away to Bangladesh. The TAYPA later appealed to the people and other organisations to support them in their stand.
