JORHAT, March 9 On the basis of laboratory reports, the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) authority today confirmed that an elderly patient of the city had suffered from swine flu and later breathed his last on Wednesday after he was referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for proper treatment.
The JMCH also sent blood samples of another two male patients to the Dibrugarh-based Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) for examination as symptoms of H1N1 (swine flu) virus infection were observed in them after they were admitted into the hospital on Sunday. Both of them are said to be residents of Jorhat.
Officials concerned said that an isolated intensive care unit (ICU) was being set up exclusively for providing treatment for swine flu in the JMCH. However, the hospital is yet to be provided with adequate numbers of doctors, nurses and other supportive medical staff, portable ventilators and medicines required for the treatment.
