Swachh Bharat Mission yet to make any impact in Tezpur

By Shambhu Boro

TEZPUR, Sept 23 - Though according to the World Health Organization, Tezpur is one of the cleanest cities in India, presently the common people find no civic joy here as most of the areas/wards of the historically significant town are becoming filthier. The historic town branded as the City of Beauty is fast losing its past glory and is turning into a city of garbage dumping due to many a reasons including lack of timely the clearing of garbage by the authorities concerned and the many anti-social activities perpetrated by a section of the town.

More importantly at a time when Swachh Bharat Mission has been able to gain momentum among the people with good feedback coming from various corners, the mission is yet to make any impact on Tezpur town.

It is to be mentioned here that the denizens of the New Amulla Patti area (popular as Dalim Bora Path) under Ward No-3 have expressed their total dissatisfaction over the filthy condition in their ward that has almost thrown public life out of gear. From the educational standpoint, the area has a number of schools including the historic Silver Jubilee School, Tezpur Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, Harijan Hindi LP School, Vivekanada School and the government computer institute, where hundreds of children are forced to study amidst an unpleasant condition.

Unhygienic atmosphere created by stray pigs and cows, open selling of pork, throwing of waste materials on the street, gambling by delinquent youths of the area, stone pelting on the temples in the area during offering of pujas by devotees, thefts etc., have totally destroyed the civic atmosphere in the area. However, though seeking solution to the long-pending problems of the area representations were submitted for many a time to agencies concerned including the Municipality Board, Town Development Authority and the Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur, till that no any result is achieved.

Lamenting the condition, a resident of the ward stated that one has to pass by the area covering their mouths with handkerchiefs to avoid unpleasant odour. Since we have failed in getting a positive result from the local authorities regarding the problem, we are preparing a documentary having footage alongwith a representation to forward to the Prime Minister who has been vocal on creating a clean nation through Swachh Bharat Mission. We are hopeful that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely take up the issue reviewing how a city with such dirty conditions can get recognition of the cleanest city in the country. He added that not only this, in many areas in the town including Civil Chariali area (Near Himmatsingka), near Darrang College area and on the Ananta Hall Road, garbage dumping is a regular scene.

Other than these there are some other problems in the town among which is the most deplorable road conditions. Despite having sufficient funds for the development of the town, the administration as well as the local MLA have been seen to be reluctant to the developmental works of the town. If this continues, in the days to come Tezpur will totally fail to attract people coming from outside, he maintained.
