Sunrise AC clinch maiden title

GUWAHATI, July 14 - Sunrise Athletic Club finally managed to win a crown in the Guwahati Sports Association organised tournaments.

Playing a decent game the Sunrise AC rallied to defeat NF Railway Sports Club by a clear margin of 4-1 goals in the final of the Nripendra Narayan Bhattacharyya Knock-out Football tournament at the Nehru Stadium here today.

The Sunrise team received an early jolt conceding a goal in the third minute when Chaya Ram Basumatary fired home.

But gradually the winning team managed to get their act together and started raiding the opponent�s territory with well planned moves. Sourav Chutia scored the equaliser in the 34th minute with a header after anticipating a floater sent by Rakesh Das off a set piece.

In the 43rd minute, Rakesh himself gave his team a 2-1 lead as opponent goalkeeper NI Singh fumbled in gathering the ball.

After the break the Sunrise players took complete control of the situation and virtually toyed with the railway defence. Showing his individual brilliance Rakesh netted his second and team�s third goal in the 63rd minute with a power-packed drive from inside the box. Rakesh completed his hat-trick in the 78th minute outwitting the opponent goalkeeper with a solo effort.

NF Railway forward Deepak Ghatowar was given marching orders in the 65th minute after being booked twice.

Rakesh Das received the man-of-the-tournament award.

In the closing function, Assam Football Association secretary, Ankur Dutta; family members of NN Bhatta, JN Bhattacharyya, Panchami Bhattacharyya were present as guests.
