SILCHAR, July 2 � The alleged suicide committed by a woman in Sonai constituency under Cachar district has stirred fresh debate on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update.
At a time when the police is denying any plausible connections to the alleged suicide, committed by the woman with harassment due to the NRC update, the AIUDF has claimed this to be a direct consequence of fear psychosis on the people to furnish documents for the upgradation.
Saibun Nesa Laskar (45), a resident of South Mohanpur in Sonai constituency, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday morning, as she was unable to trace the legacy data of her ancestors, needed to be submitted for the NRC. Police recovered the dead body and sent it to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post mortem. Locals said that the lady has been hopping around for collecting her legacy data. It is possible that the lady might have been panicked from the comments of �pushback� by a vicious group, which is spreading panic among the people on the NRC, they maintained.
Meanwhile, following her death, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, a Congress-turned-AIUDF leader, has said that it is a glaring example of how the Congress Government in the State is exerting needless fear among the people of being deported to Bangladesh, if they fail to furnish proper and valid documents for updating the NRC. �Since the last few days, the lady was mentally torn apart because she could not assemble the legacy data documents for submitting her NRC application. The Government and its inefficiency is solely responsible for the complex procedure in the filling up of the form. A CBI probe must be initiated in this case,� Barbhuiya was quoted as saying. Islam Uddin, brother of the deceased also alleged that his sister took this step because of extreme pressure. It is learnt that the party has demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next kin of the deceased.
BK Chetry, officer in-charge of Sonai police out post said that police has received an FIR from the family of the deceased and a case of unnatural death has been registered. She lived in extreme poverty. But there was no mention of any harassment on the deceased because of NRC, nor was there any suspicious reason behind her death.
On the other hand, the Coordination Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Barak Valley, headed by former MP Kabindra Purakaystha told the media that a delegation of the committee will meet the Register General of India and appeal to him to take steps to extend the last date of submission of applications to December 31. Blaming the Congress for all the confusion, complex procedures leading to harassment faced by the people in filling the forms, Purakaystha said that the RGI would be urged upon to intervene and place the prayer before the Supreme Court to extend the date till December 31 instead of July 31.
