Sugarcane farmers in dire straits

By CORRESPONDENT

MORIGAON, Jan 6 The sugarcane farmers of Morigaon and Nagaon districts have been facing severe hardships as the Agriculture department of the State government is yet to settle the prices of sugarcane or molasses in the market.

As the Kampur Cooperative Sugar Mill in Nagaon district was closed down a few years back, sugarcane farmers of Morigaon and Nagaon districts did not get due prices of their products. As a result, thousands of indigenous farmers of both the districts gave up sugarcane cultivation. Only a small group of farmers continued the cultivation of sugarcane but due to the lack of any government policy, these farmers are now compelled to sell their molasses (gur) at throw away prices in the open markets. The farmers have urged the government to open the Kampur Cooperative Sugar Mill and settle their sugarcane prices soon.
