Students target group for observance

GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - The Kamrup Metro district administration has lined up a series of events for observance of the 28th Road Safety Week from January 9 to 15.

�The target group for this year�s Road Safety Week will be the schoolchildren and college and university students,� Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, told this newspaper.

He said that with a view to spreading awareness on road safety, a meeting will be convened with headmasters and principals of all the schools and colleges of Kamrup Metro district in coordination with the Inspector of Schools to formulate an action plan and make a schedule for imparting road safety education to the students of various schools and colleges.

Necessary resources, like technical and manpower support for this, will be provided by the transport department and traffic police.

Around one lakh handbills in the Assamese and English languages have been prepared for distribution among students.

�The District Transport Office (Enforcement) will conduct awareness programmes and demonstrations and enforcement drives with the help of Traffic Police in major points across the city throughout the week. Each stakeholder department related to road safety will install stalls in Nehru Park to highlight the importance of road safety for the children and the general public throughout the week,� said Dr Angamuthu.

The Superintendent of Excise will conduct a seminar and workshop on the menace of drunken driving with owners of bars, liquor shops and restaurants during the week.

The PWD (Roads) has been directed to incorporate the basic road safety parameters, like road marking, zebra crossing, reflectors in dividers, etc. It will also conduct a seminar on road safety during the week.

The transport department will conduct an awareness programme-cum-seminar on road safety for drivers and conductors in association with various transport associations during the Road Safety Week, while the Joint Director of Health Services will conduct a health check-up camp-cum-road safety awareness programme for drivers and conductors as well as for the general public.

�At least 3-4 mobile vans equipped with banners containing road safety slogans will be made ready for displaying in various roads of Guwahati. In addition, an advertisement on road safety for publicity in electronic and print media, as well as FM radio and cinema halls, has been prepared,� said Dr Angamuthu.
