Students should choose politics as a career to serve society: Speaker

GUWAHATI, July 2 - Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami today urged the younger generation to opt for politics as a career in order to serve society.

He was speaking at the inaugural event of the first �Internship� programme held at the Central Hall of Assam Legislative Assembly.

The Internship programme is a first of its kind in the parliamentary history of the State.

It is offering internship to 20 students, who have been selected on merit, for a period of one month under the Speaker�s Research Initiative.

Under this programme, students from different parts of the State and from different colleges and universities will get an opportunity to research on selected topics related to the Assembly in an academic manner.

They will get access to the library and the archive of the Legislative Assembly and will make reports on their research findings.

Speaking on the occasion, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Debabrata Saikia spoke about the importance of an opposition in a democratic system of government.

MLA Pabindra Nath Deka congratulated the students and asked them to give their best and utilise the opportunities they would get in the Assembly.

Hrishikesh Goswami, Media Adviser to the Chief Minister, laid emphasis on the fact that such initiatives improve self-confidence among the students.

Dr AK Singh, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, suggested measures like publishing the research findings of the students in the form of a book for easy reference in the future and to attract more and more young people towards the parliamentary affairs.

The programme was also attended by Principal Secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly MK Deka and Additional Secretary AN Deka, among others.
