Students arrested for assault, released

MANGALDAI, Aug 31 - Four Degree third semester students of Mangaldai College were arrested recently on the charges of assaulting the general secretary of the college students� union body, Biswajyoti Deka and his fellow class mate Himanta Biswa Hazarika during college hours.

A case no. 734/ 15 was registered at the Sadar Police Station here, said Inspector Lohit Ch Rabha, Officer in Charge of the police station. However, they were later released on bail. Biswajyoti Deka lodged a police complaint against six students of the Degree third semester of the college, namely Pranjal Hadi Hassan, Ashraful Zaman, Lucky Hussain, Ahmad Hussain, Tarique Ahmed and Mustafijur Rahman. Subsequently, hundreds of students of the college came out into the streets and staged a protest blockade of the NH 15 in front of the college for about half an hour demanding immediate booking of the students involved in the attack on their leader. On the other hand, local leaders of the ruling Congress party tried their level best for an amicable settlement of the dispute, as both the students group belong to the NSUI, a wing of the ruling party.

Finally, both the groups reportedly came to a negotiated settlement in the presence of principal of the college, as the accused students apologised for their misdeeds before Biswajyoti Deka and Hemanta Biswa Hazarika and assured the college authority of not violating discipline in the future. The altercation is stated to have developed following the recent celebration of the freshmen social of the college.
