Stress on scientific river management

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 3 Stressing the need for scientific river management to effectively control the annual menace of floods and erosion in the State, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the State Government was in touch with various agencies to mitigate the problem.

While stating that there has been no comprehensive scientific study of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries as yet, Gogoi further added that a scientific research of the rivers, besides other flood-control measures, would be needed to effectively check floods.

The Brahmaputra has its own specific attributes which needs to be studied scientifically. The rivers must be channelized and only ad-hoc measures like building embankments will not help, he added while talking to mediapersons here today.

Gogoi informed that the State Government has already started consultations with international organizations, like the Earth Institute, on these issues and had even approached the UNDP for their help in enlisting neighbouring countries cooperation for river management.

The State has also sought more coordination among neighbouring countries for sharing metrological data and setting up a regional office of the Central Water Commission in the State.
