Stress on biodiversity conservation

GUWAHATI, June 5 � Along with the rest of the world, in Assam, too, the World Environment Day was celebrated in a befitting manner.

Tezpur: Several organisations today celebrated the World Environment Day across Sonitpur district organising various programmes and competitions.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur, located at Napam under the Assam Agricultural University, observed the Day with a day-long programme at Panchmile Higher Secondary School. The event started with a plantation programme by Dr PC Deka, programme coordinator, KVK Sonitpur, and Md A Gani, in-charge principal of Panchmile Higher Secondary School. It was followed by a drawing competition among the students of class VI to VIII and an elocution competition on environmental issues among the students of class IX to XII.

The open session was presided over by Md A Gani. Besides programme coordinator Dr PC Deka, Anjan Krishna Sarmah, SMS (Agronomy) and Dr Bikram Borkotoki, SMS (Soil Science) also spoke on different topics like environment and biodiversity conservation, rainwater harvesting and recycling of biodegradable waste. The winners of the drawing and elocution competitions were awarded during the open session.

In his presidential speech, Md Gani lauded KVK Sonitpur for providing environmental education to the students.

Milon Dutta, subject teacher of Panchmile Higher Secondary School, offered the vote of thanks at the end of the open session.

Meanwhile, 12 Assam Rifles, Chardwar, also observed the day under the aegis Red Horns Division in a bid to create awareness among the local masses about the importance of tree plantation.

The Commandant of the Assam Rifles Battalion led the plantation programme at Lokhra, in which a number of local people participated.

Addressing the gathering, CO, 12 Assam Rifles, stressed the importance of a healthy environment for future generations.

Tinsukia: To create awareness about the importance of a healthy environment, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tinsukia, observed the Environment Day at Gelapukhuri LP School situated on the outskirts of the town today with day-long programmes.

Students of Jawala Prasad Kanoi ME School also participated in the celebrations. The tree plantation programme organised on the occasion was initiated by Dr Amal Chandra Sharma, programme coordinator, KVK Tinsukia. Bhaskar Borgohain, headmaster, Gelapukhuri LP School, officers and staff of the KVK, as well as the teachers and students of the schools participated in the programme with enthusiasm.

On the occasion, art and quiz competitions on subjects related to the environment were also organized amongst the students.

To mark the World Environment Day, the women�s wing of Parivesh Surakhya Samity, an NGO, arranged free distribution of saplings at the District Library compound here.

Nagaon: On the occasion of the World Environment Day today, a function was organised here under the auspices of Sadou Asam Gramya Puthibharal Santha. The function, formally declared open by Junu Das Saikia, ADC, was chaired by Premeswar Das.

Tree plantation, cleanliness drive, a colourful procession and different competitions were the highlights of the day�s programme.

Another function was arranged here by Sreemanta Sankardev Junior College with Rector MM Baruah in the chair. Several students expressed their views about the importance of the Environment Day and biodiversity conservation. Tree plantation was carried out in the college premises to mark the occasion.
